Description

Double-Pass AOM Clusters are versatile opto-mechanical units that enable dynamic frequency control and intensity modulation of laser light. These setups can be combined with beam splitters, monitor diodes, shutters and other established multicube™ components.

Optical Setup
The input light enters the system via a PM fiber cable. A photodiode positioned immediately after the input port enables continuous monitoring of the input laser power. Subsequently, the incident light is diffracted and frequency shifted by the acousto-optic modulator (AOM). To reduce the frequency dependence of the diffraction angle, the system utilizes a 'cat's-eye' configuration. In this configuration, the diffracted light is focused onto a retroreflective mirror, propagates back through the setup collinearly and is diffracted again by the AOM. On its way, the light passes through a quarter-wave plate twice. The resulting retardance leads to perpendicular polarization with respect to the input beam and allows the collinear beams to be separated by a PBS. The frequency-shifted beam is detuned by twice the applied radiofrequency and can be used for one to x output ports or can be combined with other Multicube Systems.

Acousto-optic Modulators
The acousto-optic modulators form the centerpiece of all Integrated AOM Systems. We integrate purchased AOMs (e.g. MT-Series from AA Optoelectronics, AOMO-Series from Gooch & Housego as well as corresponding modulators from other manufacturers with a similar form factor). The tunability and the efficiency of the system are determined by the diffraction efficiency of the respective AOM.

Fiber Couplers
A fundamental component of Integrated AOM Systems is the Laser Beam Coupler, which is used to collimate the radiation at the input of the opto-mechanical unit. It is also employed to couple the output radiation back into a polarization-maintaining fiber cable. The stability of the Integrated AOM System is determined by the stability of the Laser Beam Coupler.
