FAQ

  • 48AT
    • Can I use the 48AT attenuator with multimode fibers?
No you should not. If used with single-mode fibers the fibers serve as a mode filter and the exiting beam is still Gaussian with reduced power. In case of a multimode fiber not only the power is attenuated but also the intensity distribution ex fiber is affected.
    • Is the attenuator type 48AT suitable for high power applications ?
Unfortunately, the type 48AT attenuator is not suitable for high power applications.

In the attenuator, the incoming beam is partially blocked and diffracted by a steel ball. The subsequent coupling into a single-mode fiber (PM fiber) serves as a mode filter.

The suppressed power is not specifically absorbed in a light trap. Instead, it is partially diffracted and it still reaches the fiber connector, but is no longer coupled.

When using the 48AT with high optical powers the diffracted portion alone is enough to destroy the fiber end-face as well as the fiber connector.
